Knitting Wild by Theressa Silver is a book of knitting patterns inspired by and dedicated to the wild beauty of America's national parks and wildlife refuges. It is a lush collection of hats, mitts, shawls, scarves, and cowls that are fun to knit and to wear. There are 21 patterns, each accompanied by information about the place that served as its inspiration. Also included in the book are discussions of how human activities affect the natural world, why this matters, and what we can do about it.

The patterns showcase unique aspects of each location and serve to highlights issues of climate change, habitat conservation, and endangered species protection. I've included a wide range of parks and refuges. Some, like Yellowstone and Great Smoky National Parks, many readers will have visited. Others, like the Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge, are so out of the way that most of us will only visit them in photos. It is my hope that this book will inspire knitters to think about these wild places and the threats they face, and to take action to help preserve wildlife, not only in parks and refuges, but also in their own backyards and neighborhoods.
